Unlocking Creativity: Overcoming Writer's Block by Writing Through It

Read: 2808

One secret to overcoming writer's block

Writing has been a part of my professional life since the days I spent at school, work, and college. I've been working as an editor for books for over 15 years now, but that hasn't stopped me from writing articles, marketing pieces, blog posts, essays, research papers, and many other types of content throughout my career.

Along this journey, I've encountered writer's block numerous times, just like many others do. To be clear, writer's block is a cluster of issues that causes you to feel as though you can't produce the necessary writing when it needs to be written. I won't shy away from naming or defining something; however, simply complning about it and then throwing up your hands isn't acceptable if writing serves as your livelihood.

In my book 'Break Through Writer’s Block', I outlined 10 general causes of writer's block such as fear, perfectionism, boredom, information overload, among others. Nonetheless, today I want to share a revelation that has emerged from my writing experience.

Write through it

Sometimes you're blocked not because of the issue at hand but because your inner spirit is urging you to write something else, which you stubbornly resist. As writers, we often feel obligated to adhere to rigid schedules or prescribed methods that work well for others, rather than our own intuition and needs.

But sometimes, an unexpected idea creeps in and disrupts all the writing prescriptions and techniques we've meticulously planned. And sometimes being blocked is simply a sign that you need to give in and write what your soul demands.

Carrying a journal and using Evernote

To address this issue, I always carry a journal with me - along with a quick access to my Evernote account. The flow of words, ideas, and emotions feels like they are getting stuck sometimes; but if we can just release them through freewriting in the journal, we will free ourselves to write what needs to be written.

What I've observed and experienced is that once you write those unrefined thoughts down, your creative block disappears. You'll feel liberated enough to move on to the next task at hand.
