Creative DIY Craft Activity: Harnessing the Power of Words

This educational craft project is designed to students across a wide age spectrum, from elementary schoolers to high schoolers. It embraces cultural diversity by allowing each student to personalize their choices in medium and expression. The objective for students is clear: to think deeply about words and use them creatively on canvas.

Instructional Objective

SWBAT Students will be able to reflect on meaningful phrases, quotes, or personal inspire kindness or express feelings of unity, compassion, truth, social justice, equality, among other positive sentiments. This project reinforce the impact words can have on others and highlight their power for change.

Materials Required

Setting Up the Activity

Encourage students to jot down their favorite words that evoke kindness or thoughts from famous quotes that them. Alternatively, supply a diverse selection of 100 words in a fishbowl for students who may need assistance in selecting appropriate phrases.

Incorporating Diverse Voices and Quotes

Foster an inclusive environment by providing handouts featuring renowned quotes on love, friship, loyalty, social justice, equality, truth, among others. Allow students to select their own quote that best represents their values or the message they wish to convey.

Instructions

  1. Canvas Prep: Select a flat surface for your work area and ensure you have everything ready – water contner, paper towels, brushes, acrylic pnts, pnt cups or use recycled egg cartons, primed canvas if possible.

  2. Shadowing Choice: Decide on the color scheme, choosing a gradient effect from light to dark tones or vice versa. This will create an ombre-like background that enhances visual appeal and depth.

  3. Let the Canvas Dry for at least 2 hours before proceeding with other steps.

  4. Word Selection Cutouts: Gather your wooden letters, newspapers, scissors, or use your hands to tear strips for a distressed look. Begin by cutting out words you've chosen.

  5. Pnting Spirals: Select pnt colors and give the wood spirals a coat of color. Let them dry completely approximately 2 hours.

  6. Marking and Hanging: Write quotes on the wooden pieces with permanent markers, and as an option, use metallic markers to add sparkle to the ombre effect.

  7. Assembly Time:

    • Glue words onto the canvas using a glue stick next to the wooden letters.

    • Arrange spiral designs around or alongside the words for added interest.

    • Optionally, dot metallic markers across the background for additional texture and shine.

Encourage students to title their work and sign their creations with name and date, marking the completion of this artistic journey in personal expression.
