American Craft Council Honors Exceptional Craft Writing with Lois Moran Award

We are delighted to inform you that for three consecutive years, our organization has been honoring exceptional writing in the field of craft with the Lois Moran Award for Craft Writing. This award was named in honor of Lois Moran, a distinguished editor-in-chief of American Craft magazine who played an indispensable role in elevating the significance of craft and bringing its importance to the broader public sphere from 1980 until 2006. Since her passing in 2020, a group of generous donors has established funds to sustn this prestigious award.

We wish to ext our heartfelt gratitude to all who have contributed to the Lois Moran Award for Craft Writing - including donors, submitters, nominators, jurors, and finalists - as well as congratulating everyone who was awarded through this initiative.

OVERVIEW OF THE LOIS MORAN AWARD FOR CRAFT WRITING

The Lois Moran Award for Craft Writing celebrates a well-crafted essay or article that showcases the dynamic aspects of American craft. This award is inspired by Lois Moran’s unwavering dedication to amplifying the significance and value of craft through s. Annually, we seek nominations and submissions in her name to honor writers who are committed to advancing the dialogue about craft.

GET TO KNOW THE 2023 WINNERS

As chosen by our esteemed jurors - Sara Clugage, Sarah Darro, and Andres Payan Estrada – here are this year's award winners:

Sarah Darro, a curator, writer, and visual anthropologist with expertise in contemporary craft, art, and design. She is passionate about revitalizing museum spaces as platforms for discussion, innovation, action, and engagement through immersive experiences.

Sara Clugage, known for her focus on economic and political issues within the realms of craft and food. Her work includes editorship roles such as the Dilettante Army online journal dedicated to visual culture and critical theory, alongside being core faculty at Warren Wilson College's MA program in Critical Craft Studies.

Andres Payan Estrada, born in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, is an artist and curator who explores issues surrounding contemporary craft with a particular interest in material studies, ceramic art, and queer practices.

In recognition of their outstanding contributions to the craft conversation forward through previously published work, each winner has been awarded $1,000.

Sarah Darro, with her curatorial vision that integrates intersectionality into contemporary craft, art, and design spaces. She believes in museums as forums for discourse, innovation, action, and engagement through experience. Sarah is the Curator and Exhibitions Director at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and she has held positions like being the 2022 Jentel Foundation Art Critic at Archie Bray Foundation and the 2019 American Craft Council Emerging Voices Scholar Awardee.

Sara Clugage focuses on economic and political issues in craft through her art practice. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of Dilettante Army, an online journal for visual culture and critical theory, while also being core faculty at Warren Wilson College's MA program in Critical Craft Studies.

Andres Payan Estrada, born in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and residing in Los Angeles, is recognized as both artist and curator who engages issues revolving around contemporary craft through material and object theory, with a focus on ceramics and queer practices. He currently serves as the director of public engagement at Craft Contemporary.
